PRINCE LOBENGULA
ENGLAND, 1899

Peter Kushana Lobengula performed as King Lobengula in Frank Fillis’ ‘Sava South Africa’ – a major theatrical production which featured 200 black Africans and six elephants – initially on the London stage at Empress Theatre on Earls’ Court and then touring through the provinces including an eight week season in Salford. During this time Lobengula was a celebrity, partly due to his much publicised controversial relationship with Kitty Jewell, an English piano teacher. He later worked as a miner at Agecroft Colliery in Salford, remarried and had five children with Irishwoman (whose name remains unconfirmed). In 1913 he succesfuly applied to the Salford Revision Court for the right to vote.
